Downloading PDFs

Adobe PDF is a small, secure file that enables you to download documents onto your PC that retain their original hard copy formatting.

To open PDF files, you will need to have Adobe Acrobat Reader on your computer. If you do not have it, you will have to download it – it is free. (You may want to print these instructions for reference before clicking on this link.)

Downloading Adobe Acrobat Reader:

On the Adobe website, make sure you choose the right platform in the drop-down box before you download – it should correspond to your operating system (eg Windows XP).

Make a note of where you have downloaded the installation file, then after the download has completed, locate it on your computer and double-click on it. The installation program will do the rest.

Troubleshooting:

I've clicked on the PDF link but my browser's just gone blank.
Browsers have different ways of downloading PDFs. Most will show a progress meter having asked you where you would like the file to download to on your machine. However, some browsers (such as Explorer 5 with Acrobat 4) load in the PDF page-by-page and don't show a progress meter. In fact it is downloading – the first page should appear after a few minutes.

I've downloaded the file but nothing has appeared.
You may need to go to where the file was downloaded on your local drive (probably your c:/windows/temp directory somewhere) and click on it from there. If it still doesn't work, your Reader is not working properly and should be reinstalled.

For more troubleshooting suggestions, see the Adobe website.
